Frozen Okra Grades Explained: Pod Sizes, Cuts and What to Put in Your Spec

Whole IQF frozen okra pods from Egypt – Egy Berries
In short: Egyptian packers sort frozen okra into four whole-pod grades by pod length, roughly 1.5 cm to 5.5 cm. The grade names — extra, zero, excellent, one — are trade habit rather than a published standard, and two packers can use the same word for different lengths. Put the centimetres in your specification, not only the name. And unlike okra from India or Vietnam, okra from Egypt is not on the EU list of goods facing increased border checks.

Why grade is the first line of an okra specification

Pod length decides almost everything a kitchen cares about: how long the okra cooks, whether the pods stay whole or break down into the sauce, how the dish looks on the plate, and how many pieces a portion contains. A Middle Eastern bamia stew wants a small pod that holds its shape through a long simmer. A soup or a mixed vegetable preparation can take a longer pod that softens. Buyers who order "frozen okra" without a grade get whatever the packer has most of that week, and the complaint arrives one cooking test later.

The four whole-pod grades

GradePod lengthWhat it suits
Extra1.5 – 2.5 cmPremium retail packs and dishes where small whole pods are the point. The highest price per kilo.
Zero2.5 – 3.5 cmThe grade most often asked for in Middle Eastern retail and foodservice, for bamia and similar stews.
Excellent3.5 – 4.5 cmFoodservice and home-style cooking, where a larger pod is wanted on a larger plate.
One4.5 – 5.5 cmSoups, mixed vegetable preparations and value packs.

Our okra season runs from May to September. Pods are graded by length, then individually quick frozen, so they stay separate in the bag instead of freezing into a block. Stock is held in cold store and shipped through the year. Full specifications are on the Frozen Okra page.

Grade names are not a standard — specify centimetres

This is where most okra orders go wrong. The grade vocabulary is industry habit, not a regulation, and published catalogues from Egyptian packers disagree with each other: one lists its "extra" grade as 0.5 to 2.5 cm, another starts the same grade at 1.5 cm, and some use "fine" where others use "excellent" for the same middle size. A buyer who orders by name alone can receive pods a centimetre away from the ones that were sampled, and both sides will be able to point at their own catalogue.

The fix costs nothing: write the length range next to the grade name on the specification sheet and on the contract, and agree what percentage of off-grade pods is acceptable in a lot. Then a cooking test on the sample means something for the shipment that follows.

Whole pods or cut rings

Whole pods are bought for presentation and for dishes where the okra is visible and intact. Cut rings are bought where even cooking and easy dosing matter more than appearance: sauces, soups, ready meals and industrial preparations, where the rings disperse through the batch and cook at the same rate. Rings also portion more accurately by weight, because a ring has a far narrower weight range than a whole pod. Many buyers take both, with the whole pods graded tightly and the rings cut from a wider size band.

HS and CN codes for frozen okra

Okra has no heading of its own in the Harmonized System. Frozen okra is classified at six digits under HS 0710 80, other vegetables, uncooked or cooked by steaming or boiling in water, frozen. In the EU combined nomenclature it falls under ex 0710 80 95, while fresh okra sits under ex 0709 99 90. The eight- to ten-digit extension is set by the destination, so always confirm the full code with your own customs broker. Our guide to HS codes for frozen fruit and vegetables from Egypt covers the other products.

One consequence is worth knowing when you read market reports: because HS 0710 80 covers many vegetables, published "frozen okra" trade figures are really figures for other frozen vegetables as a group. Under that aggregated code, Egypt was the fifth largest exporter in the world in 2024, with about 122,282 tonnes worth roughly USD 199.6 million, behind Belgium, the Netherlands, Mexico and Poland. Treat the number as a measure of Egypt’s weight in frozen vegetables overall, not as an okra statistic.

EU border checks: Egyptian okra is not on the list

Under Regulation (EU) 2019/1793, as amended by Regulation (EU) 2026/194 which applies from 18 February 2026, okra is listed for increased official controls at the EU border when it originates in India (30 % identity and physical checks) or Vietnam (50 %), in both cases for pesticide residues. The Egyptian entries on the same list cover sweet and chili peppers at 30 %, vine leaves at 50 %, mango, sugar apple and strawberries — fresh, chilled or frozen — at 20 %, and oranges at 10 %. Okra from Egypt is not among them.

For an importer this is a real cost difference: consignments of Egyptian frozen okra are not subject to that increased check frequency and the delay it can add at the border post. The annexes are reviewed roughly every six months, so confirm the current version before each season. We track the strawberry side of the same regulation in our note on EU border checks for Egyptian frozen strawberries.

Frequently asked questions

What do the okra grades extra, zero, excellent and one mean?

They are pod-length grades. At Egy Berries extra is 1.5–2.5 cm, zero 2.5–3.5 cm, excellent 3.5–4.5 cm and one 4.5–5.5 cm. The names are trade usage rather than a published standard, and other packers apply them to slightly different ranges, so always confirm the length in centimetres.

Is frozen okra from Egypt subject to increased EU border checks?

No. Under Regulation (EU) 2019/1793 as amended by Regulation (EU) 2026/194, okra is listed for increased controls when it originates in India at 30 % and Vietnam at 50 %. Egypt is listed for other goods, such as peppers and strawberries, but not for okra.

What is the HS code for frozen okra?

Frozen okra is classified under HS 0710 80, other vegetables, frozen. In the EU combined nomenclature it falls under ex 0710 80 95, and fresh okra under ex 0709 99 90. The eight- to ten-digit extension depends on the destination tariff.

Should I buy whole okra or cut rings?

Whole pods suit stews and dishes where the okra is visible, and need a tight length grade. Rings suit sauces, soups and ready meals, cook evenly and portion more accurately by weight. Many buyers take both from the same season.
